Few students walk safe

Kara Chow - News Editor

The Safe Walk program on campus is one of two valuable services available to students who feel nervous about walking on campus alone in the dark.

Sadly, this service is rarely taken advantage of.

“The usage is not very high,” said TRU Student Union Executive Director Nathan Lane. “We may do between 25 and 30 walks a year.”

The Safe Walk program is operated by TRUSU to ensure a secure journey to your dorm or vehicle when it’s dark. This program is separate from the yellow telephones on campus, which put you through to campus security.

“[Safe Walk] is only available when the info booth is open and the information booth is only open during the regular semester,” Lane said. “Students seeking to get a walk outside of the information booth hours can pick up a yellow phone and call campus security.”

Regular semester hours doesn’t include exam periods. During this time, students only have the option of calling campus security if they want an escort.

If you want to arrange to have someone walk you to your dorm or vehicle, there are several options to ensuring someone will be able to assist you.

“You can call and prearrange a walk at [TRUSU’s] office or at the info booth number,” Lane said. “Or you can just show up at the Info Booth during the time it’s open and schedule a walk.”

Call (250) 371-5965 from your cellphone to arrange a walk with Safe Walk, or dial 5965 from any of the yellow telephones on campus to reach campus security.
