Mar 4Dear Toshiba
Amber Yake - News Editor
Dear Toshiba,
It’s not me, it’s you.
We had a good relationship, Toshiba, or at least I thought we did. You treated me well my first three years of college. You got me through many late nights, 3,000 word papers, you withstood the time I spilled coffee all over you and the time I left you on for three days straight.
After three good years together, you died last spring but I understood. I knew I hadn’t treated you the best and you had gotten me through a lot. I knew I wanted another one of you, so I purchased the Toshiba Satellite L300 and we settled in for what I thought would be another good three or four years together.
The first six months were good; really good. You were fast, you put up with me having multiple windows open and you had a great battery life. I treated you better than my first laptop; I shut you down every night and kept you far away from spill-able drinks. We were on a roll.
Then, one night in November 2009, a mere six months after I’d purchased you, you showed me the black screen of death.
I sent you off to get fixed and you came back with a brand spanking new hard drive. I ripped you out of the box in anticipation, it had been three weeks since I sent you off and I missed you. I was so happy to be reunited.
I tried to turn you on and nothing. I tried again; nothing.
So I sent you back to get fixed again, and this time you came back with a new motherboard. I was so happy to have you back and you were so good to me for four wonderful weeks. It was like old times.
Then, a few weeks ago, I came home after a night out and tried to turn you on for our nightly ritual of Facebook-stalking and Tweeting.
But you didn’t turn on, Toshiba. You didn’t even try. It’s like you just gave up on life.
For the third time in two months, you died on me. You were so young, only seven months old.
I called your supplier, expecting them to be shocked and appalled that one single laptop had that many problems in just a few months; they weren’t. In fact, they couldn’t have been more apathetic.
I wanted a new laptop and they said a supervisor would call me back. But he never did, even after calling back three times I was never put through to a supervisor.
Neither you nor your suppliers were treating me the way I deserved to be treated. I was a good, returning customer and I was brushed off like an annoying fly.
So I ended it with you Toshiba. I did what I said I’d never do; I got a Mac.
Good riddance, Amber
