Women's volleyball team splits weekend series

Cam Charron - Sports Editor

It took a while, and it wasn’t anybody’s definition of textbook, but the TRU WolfPack women’s volleyball team finally picked up their first win on the conference season against Simon Fraser in five sets Saturday afternoon.

After winning the first set, the WolfPack would blow a 16-9 lead in the second set and a 16-13 lead in the third set, but would rally in the fourth and fifth to win the match 25-16, 24-26, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11.

“I think Amanda [Frayne] and Anna [Dyakiewicz] really stepped up,” said head coach Cal Wohlford. “Having Lindsey [Niminiken] in there, you know she was hurting, but she wanted to play out the set and that made a huge difference for us.”

The WolfPack had ten kills and one error in the fifth set. Six of those kills came from hitter Dyakiewicz.

“I just liked going for it, we had nothing to lose, right?” Dyakiewicz said about her late performance. She finished with 22 kills and ten errors in 58 swings. Frayne had 18 kills, two errors in 38 swings, a step-up from her performance in Friday afternoon’s loss to the same SFU Clan.

Frayne had five kills and six errors in 19 attempts, which emphasized a sloppy performance from the WolfPack on Friday. Captain Kelly Asleson was not impressed.

“I thought that there were some players that didn’t step up when we needed them to,” Asleson said after Friday’s game that saw the WolfPack lose in three sets 21-25, 23-25, 22-25. “We weren’t finding a way to block, and we also needed to dig a lot better.”

Her words may have resonated Saturday as the WolfPack had a much better offensive performance, out-dug SFU 73-66, out-blocked them 8-7, and had 7 services aces to the Clanswomen’s 3.
