Letter - fun ruined by ancillary services

Dear Editor,

I do not get what is wrong with this university. They say TRU is an avenue for higher learning, yet with actions that they continue to pull there will be a decrease in students. A few examples of this come from two things that the people in ancillary services have done lately that are trying to suppress students' fun, and make TRU a communist regime.

First lets draw attention to the fiasco with Heroes and Thirsty Thursdays. SIFE is an integral part of a business student's life here at TRU, and as a club they are a strong knit faction. Like every club they need to make some sort of a profit to keep their members happy, and coming back for more. Kind of like a fraternity and sorority, SIFE offers advantages for its members, and students at large. I do not know if any group or students have tried to hold an event at Heroes (which is a students bar -- term "student" held loosely) but they charge students if the event fails. Taking more out of the coffers of some of Canada's poorest people.

So what if SIFE does not want to share? Are the church groups on campus sharing with every other club that wants space in Old Main? In my opinion, no. I mean, sure there is space for other groups to table, but everyday you see Focus Group, Chaplaincy, or "The Cult" as they call them selves, 12 stones. Maybe they are trying to recruit, or maybe they are there to preach and break our charter rights to not be preached at.

This is the second problem that The Office of The Supreme Oppressor of Students has. They only allow other clubs to table one day a week yet, as shown, these religious organizations can have as many tables as they want. Is this TRU's form of keeping the school peaceful? Or are they using student oppression, to keep us all bored and away from campus, and to force us all in to religion? I know my answer, what's yours?

Justin Bourke, 2nd year Arts
