The article by Sarah Bruce, "Why Did the Student Cross the Street?" in your January 13th 2010 issue was infuriating. When did journalism become a forum for selfish whining?
It was essentially reading an article about how a student believes that a lack of time management skills takes precedence over obeying the known laws.
There is a sign on the median facing each side of the road advising potential jay-walkers of the fine they risk taking if they commit such an act. And also, if the road was free and clear, as Bruce had stipulated, then there would be no issue of running into the ghost car, as she did. Perhaps this is a sign of lack of objective observational skills, which were brought back into her opinion column.
It is shameful that there is so much objection to the inability to jay-walk. When have we become so lazy? We should be grateful we have the ability to use walking as a way of self-transportation, because some people are not that lucky.
So there is no pedestrian bridge. Suck it up and take the crosswalk and make sure you allow the time for the extra walking. Better that than risk an accident, or to keep griping about how you take your legs for granted.
