Going from high school to university is scary, but what’s even scarier? Going from university to real life. This column is going to look at, and hopefully help ease you into, this transition that all university students have to make eventually. The transition from a dorm to an apartment, from a grocery store job to an office, from a 10:00 a.m. wake-up call to a 7:00 a.m. one, from student loans to a mortgage and everything in between. I’m a fourth-year journalism student at TRU and, along with many of you, I’ll be graduating this spring. Since I went to university right after high school, the idea of leaving school behind is a little frightening to me. I sometimes wonder if I’m cut out for the real world. Can I afford to support myself without the help of my parents or student loans? Will I ever have enough money to make a big purchase like a house? Should I travel before beginning work full-time? Should I be saving for retirement already when I’m only 21? Questions like these and many more are ones that I plan on addressing in this column. As well as the dreaded, “but the economy sucks, how am I going to find a job?” There are jobs out there; you just need to know the right people to talk to and the right place to look. This column will address those problems. Next week we will be looking at why, and how, you should be starting your job search right now. If you have any questions or a topic you’d like me to address, please email me at amber.yake@gmail.com.
