Dear Editor,
Kamloops drivers blow me away on a daily basis. If they aren’t forgetting to yield, they’re forgetting to signal. If they’re not forgetting to halt at stop signs, they’re forgetting to slow down in school zones. If they’re not flaunting their aggressive behavior and driving, they’re multi-tasking while driving. Let’s be honest: I’m sure we’ve all disobeyed these laws at some point in time. There are just some people who choose to more frequently. These people really grind my gears and are hazards to the Kamloops roads. I love it when people can’t quite decide if they have the right of way. You pull up to a four-way stop; they were obviously there first but they don’t move. You know it’s not your turn so you sit and wait for them to refresh their brain on the driving rules. After a few seconds of waiting for them you realize that you’re not getting anywhere. So you decide to go first and carry on cruising. As you go through the four-way stop you have to pass them - little do you know the old lady driving decides to call you a “beep.” While you digest this word you think “I’m a beep?”. You need to go take a driving test lady! Let’s all get real here, I’m sure everyone multi-tasks and drives. If you said “no” I’m going to assume you’re a liar. Have you smoked a cigarette while driving? Ate some McDonalds because you couldn’t wait to have those greasy fries? Put lip gloss on because you have to look attractive while you drive? Obviously it’s crucial to be gorgeous on the road because you never know who might try and stir up a conversation with you. Then there are drivers who drink and drive or inhale a little reef before putting their motor vehicle in action. I know what you’re going to say: “I focus so much better when I’m high” or “I totally saw that pedestrian, you didn’t have to freak out.” Yah, these are all totally realistic alibis… not! Then there are the elderly drivers and the “learner” drivers. Now don’t get me wrong - I’m not making a crack at the elderly, but some of them should allow someone else to drive. I mean when you have to squint to see if it’s red or green there’s a problem. I know when you were waiting for the turning arrow you blinked every time it did and that’s clearly why you missed the turn. Then there’s the “L” drivers who they have no idea what’s going on. I suppose we need to take into consideration that their parents are teaching them how to drive and most likely are peeing their pants while doing so. For whatever reason it’s these drivers I get stuck behind the most. So, I’m sure some of you are nodding your heads in agreement. Don’t fool yourselves; you may be the person I’m ranting about. To the others who believe they’re exceptional drivers: no one’s an exceptional driver. I’m not a beauty of a driver, but at least I know the rules of the road. That’s it, that’s all. Stay classy Kamloops and thanks for stopping by.

I definitely agree with this article. I went to high school down in the coast so I learned how to drive in that horrible traffic. When I moved to Kamloops to go to TRU I thought the reduction in traffic volume would reduce most of my driving stress. I am more stressed out about driving around Kamloops than I am driving around down town Vancouver. As the author of this article said, “I’m not a beauty of a driver” but at least I’m predictable.
My largest annoyance with many of the bad drivers is their unwillingness to turn into the inside lane when making a left hand turn. I see this most often at the intersection of McGill and Summit. I understand that there are a lot of TRU students that live in Sahali and need to make that quick change into the right lane so that they can pull into TRU’s East entrance. But it’s no excuse for making the lane change without looking. Stay in the left lane until it is clear. Drivers coming up from the North Shore and turning right onto McGill should be able to pull into the right lane during an advanced left. Do not expect them to yield to you.
