You probably didn’t notice that this Omega is the first issue of Volume 19, but you may have noticed that your favourite campus newspaper has a different look to it.
Essentially, this is a brand new era in this newspaper’s history. As the new Editor-in-Chief, it’s time to make my mark and lead The Omega to greatness.
The layout changes are a part of this goal of mine. They are meant to visually reflect The Omega’s editorial commitment to a serious community newspaper that focuses on articles that reflect the needs, concerns and interests of the TRU community.
But as the newspaper grows up, so does its staff.
The majority of The Omega staff from last year will be graduating alongside myself on June 4, and have already moved on to that big, scary “real world.”
But they’ve been doing OK so far and a couple have beaten the recession odds and snagged well-deserved media jobs – in Kamloops, no less!
Ex-news editor Kara Chow is now working as Editor of the Northshore and Downtown Echo, while Leah Miller, former copy editor, is in charge of Kamloops Daily News’ business magazine.
It’s great to watch the people I learned with go on to take over the Kamloops media. If things keep progressing in this manner, we’ll own this town in no time!
But alas, Kamloops’ gain is my loss. And while I’m sad to see such an excellent team go, their departure marks a new opportunity for growth.
One of the first things I did this summer was hire entirely new staff, albeit one individual.
While these keen young whipper-snappers won’t officially be working until September, you can see some of their articles in this issue.
Sarah Bruce, campus editor, has plunged into action and has already written a front page article on the major realignment and her opinion piece on swine flu fear-mongering.
Our talented sports editor, Cam Charron, has also already delved into the WolfPack world with a story about our newest champions: the TRU baseball team (page 8.)
It’s a good start and I’m confident that the new Omega staff will be fantastic and, together, we’re going to make this the best year this newspaper has ever had.
